Charity of the Week – Week 3

The Downs Law Firm K104 Scoreboard Show is proud to support our local charities. We donate $500 every game to one of several local charitable organizations.

This week is a little different. We’re supporting a local teacher in her fight against cancer. Mrs. Laura McLeland, a Sterlington High School teacher, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma. She is currently in the middle of six bi-weekly cycles of chemo treatments at MD Anderson in Houston. As you would expect, the financial strains involved with this can be overwhelming on a family. On top of the $500 donated by the Downs Law Firm, the Game of the Week will also take a moment to “pass the hat” to raise money among the crowd. We hope you’ll be there and be generous!

We also want to recognize the spirit of cooperation between Sterlington High School and Oak Grove High School in raising money for Mrs. McLeland. Please see these notes made by Oak Grove High School and Sterlington High School:

Oak Grove
So as many of you know, we play Friday Night at Sterlington for a battle on the field that is sure to draw a crowd.
But this evening we want to share about someone that is truly fighting a battle. Laura McLeland, SHS Teacher, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma. She is currently in the middle of 6 cycles of bi-weekly chemo treatments at MD Anderson in Houston, TX.
Together with Sterlington High School, we want to do something more than just play a football game. We want to help a teacher that is going through so much right now.
So Tiger fans, we are calling on you! We will be participating in a “passing of a hat” at the game on Friday night to raise funds for Mrs. Laura. Also, Oak Grove High School will have a hat day on Friday to help raise funds. Students can pay $1 to wear a hat on Friday at school.
Rise to the challenge Oak Grove and show how two schools can come together and stand behind Mrs. Laura and her family.

Sterlington
Hey Panther Family! For a while we’ve been planning something special for one of our precious teachers, Mrs. Laura McLeland. As many of you know she has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma. Laura is currently in the middle of 6 bi weekly cycles of chemo treatments in Houston at MD Anderson. As you would expect, this can be overwhelming for a family. To help Mrs. McLeland and her family, we will “pass the hat” tomorrow night at the SHS v OG game during the 3rd quarter. Members of our spirit organizations will pass buckets on the home side, visitor side, and in the tent area. Thank you ahead of time to everyone that participates. Special thank you to the OG administration and football team for jumping on board with this from the beginning. We have an awesome community. Whether you’re a Panther or Tiger we appreciate the love that will be shown to our sweet teacher and friend, Laura. Thank you again for your generosity!

We got the following note from the Sterlington High School principal following the game:
“We are pleased to announce that through the combined efforts of both the Sterlington and Oak Grove communities along with the Ross Downs Law Firm, we were able to raise $6,537.14 last night for the Laura McLeland family!! A special thank you goes out to the Oak Grove administration, Coach Ryan Gregory, and the entire student body at Oak Grove high school for their love and compassion that they have shown this past week. We will forever be grateful to the Tigers! To our Sterlington community….you showed up and showed out like we knew you would! Proud to be a Panther!”

We at the Downs Law Firm K104 Scoreboard Show are proud of the Oak Grove and Sterlington communities for coming together in such a special way to raise so much money for someone who truly deserves it. Way to go!
